Yoga - General Info
Yoga is a healing system of theory and practice. It is a combination of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. While yoga evolved as a spiritual practice in Hinduism, in the Western world, a part of yoga, known as Asana, has grown popular as a form of purely physical exercise. Some Western forms have little or nothing to do with Hinduism or spirituality, but are simply a way of keeping fit and healthy. On Wikipedia you find a huge compilation of data, also about the history of Yoga

Yoga is good for your Health
A survey released in May 2004 by the US National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that Yoga was the 5th most commonly used CAM therapy excluding prayer (5.1%) in the United States during 2002. Yoga is considered a mind-body intervention that is used to reduce the health effects of generalized stress. Yoga is believed to calm the nervous system and balance the body, mind, and spirit. It is thought by its practitioners to prevent specific diseases and maladies by keeping the energy meridians open and life energy (Prana) flowing.

And according to the 2008 "Yoga in America" Market Study of the Yoga Journal, 6.1%, or nearly 14 million Americans, say that a doctor or therapist has recommended yoga to them. In addition, nearly half (45%) of all adults agree that yoga would be a beneficial if they were undergoing treatment for a medical condition. "Yoga as medicine represents the next great yoga wave," says Kaitlin Quistgaard, editor in chief of Yoga Journal. "In the next few years, we will be seeing a lot more yoga in health care settings and more yoga recommended by the medical community as new research shows that yoga is a valuable therapeutic tool for many health conditions."

Most common form of Yoga in the Western World: Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is what most people in the West associate with the word “Yoga” and is practised for mental and physical health throughout the West. It includes several styles like Ashtanga Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar, Integral, Kripalu, and Jiva Mukti to name a few. Hatha Yoga as preparatory stage of physical purification that the body practices for higher meditation.

Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic yogic path, including moral disciplines, physical postures (asana), purification procedures (Shatkriya), poses (mudra), yogic breathing (pranayama), and meditation. The Hatha yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas understood as physical exercises. It is also recognized as a stress-reducing practice.

Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water, following similar concept as yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or "asanas", purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance and strength and are practised to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment.
